July is a month of feeling of exultation and jubilation from the scorching heat. It's that time when children feel rejuvenated after their long, fun filled summer break. Another month of learning new concepts through activities that hone their skills and bring about holistic development in their personality. Monthly theme being ‘Animals’ was a very big attraction for the children as they were sensitized about them through integrating various subjects. The children were excited by a range of activities done during this joyous month. The Magnificent Mornings were named differently each day giving them a positive start of the day. Mingle Monday was a Rapport building session in which the educator and children interacted and bonded. Terrific Tuesday was a day to Discuss the monthly theme, Wow Wednesday was a Surprise element for the children which they eagerly awaited. Tango Thursday- Let's dance! Every one wore their dancing shoes and had fun. Fantastic Friday was the Early Primary Assembly Day, wherein the children conducted the assemblies celebrating special days and events. The educators and children had fun and looked forward to attend each session. The universal value of the month being Honesty was inculcated and reinforced through activities and stories related to the theme. MATHEMATICSOur young sun citizens were engaged throughout the entire month of July recapitulating Place Value concept and grouping objects. As hands on activity, to understand the concept of Patterns, students made their own patterns using red kidney beans and chickpeas. They took four bowls and formed number patterns by counting and placing the kidney beans in the bowl. The elaboration of the concept was done by students watching a presentation in class and attempting live-worksheets. The learning process started with Real Life Connection on Family. As part of the topic, students understood the meaning of terms like nuclear, joint, maternal and paternal. Later a fun activity on “Introduce your Family” using props was done in the class. Children introduced their family members using photographs, family tree, puppets etc. Further with the help of a PowerPoint Presentation and videos, the topic of sharing household chores was discussed. Students understood the importance of sharing work and expressed their experiences. The importance of values of sharing and caring was reiterated. This was followed by the discussion on Celebration with family. Students with the help of a PowerPoint Presentation could relate to the festivals we celebrate with our family. Apart from festivals they even shared other special occasions such as birthday, anniversaries which they celebrate with their families. A game of “what went missing” was played in the class. Students turn by turn switched off the camera and changed something about their look. The rest of the class had to find the difference. This was the pre-cursor to the next topic ‘Games’. The concept of indoor and outdoor games was shown by videos. The topic of Animals was introduced through a virtual game. As a tool, Spinning Wheel was used to call out the student’s names to answer so that all students get their turn to answer. They eagerly waited for their turn and enjoyed seeing their name pop up on the wheel. As a reflection to the topic and to assess students understanding, they learnt to use a Padlet wall to give feedback about their learning. ENGLISHLanguage plays a pivotal role in learning. Students develop literacy skills, assimilate new concepts and are able to formulate their thoughts, information and data and present it appropriately. Students revised the concepts done prior vacations through ‘live worksheets’ and online games. They learnt to express themselves and value relationships by sharing about their love and respect for their families. They also identified and explained similarities and differences between themselves and other age groups thus demonstrating evidence of inquiry. The students plated a dish derived out of rainbow coloured fruits and vegetables reiterating the healthy eating habits in ‘Eat a Rainbow’ activity. The students learnt how to use the punctuation marks and used it accurately by framing sentences and asking questions. The learning journey continued with the Fable festival as the students enhanced their reading and comprehension skills. In the following classes, students were informed about the 6 different types of chess pieces in the game, how the board is set up and how every chess piece has a unique way of moving across the board. They were introduced to online chess gaming portal where they were given various chess puzzles related to the movement of all chess pieces. Gradually, they were introduced to the concepts of capture, protection and combat. They were also given a chance to play an actual game against the computer. DRAMAIn Drama lessons, students : Learnt forms of Acting... with the help of stories and drama activities. They learnt about mood and expressions like happy, sad, angry, scared, etc. Learnt to Apply their learning of :- Gestures, postures, body language and voice modulation Human and animal characters, their movements and their sounds. Additionally, they listened to many stories—‘The Naughty Boy’, ‘The Camel and the Zebra’, ‘The Rabbit and the Lion’, ‘The Lion and the Bulls’. Students understood various forms acting through these stories. They also performed warm up exercises and practiced the nine emotions of acting (Navarasa). LIFE SKILLS“Honesty is the best policy”, taking the monthly theme into consideration, the importance of honesty was explained to the students. Students learnt the importance of being truthful and the consequences of lying, no one will trust us ever. Also, BEING HELPFUL, CARING and COMMON GOOD concepts were introduced with enthusiastic videos and letting each student share their own experiences. This month’s learning includes being helpful and caring makes others happy and builds strong relations. Students enjoyed a lot learning these values.
